Reviving a Captiva Icon

Full Commercial Reconstruction of The Mucky Duck After Hurricane Milton

Captiva's Coastal Landmark

The Mucky Duck has been a defining part of Captiva Island’s waterfront for nearly half a century. Established in 1976, the restaurant quickly became known for its relaxed coastal atmosphere, beachfront setting, and one of the most iconic sunset views along the Gulf. Over the years it has welcomed generations of locals, visitors, and families who return to Captiva year after year, making the Mucky Duck not just a restaurant but a landmark woven into the island’s identity.

Perched directly along the shoreline, the building has always embodied the character of Captiva itself — casual, historic, and deeply connected to the surrounding environment. Guests have gathered there for decades to watch the sun set over the water, share meals with friends and family, and experience a place that feels uniquely tied to the rhythms of island life.

Like many coastal structures along Southwest Florida’s barrier islands, the Mucky Duck has weathered its share of storms over the years. But its location and long-standing presence also reflect the resilience of the Captiva community — a place where rebuilding and preserving local landmarks has always been part of maintaining the island’s character.

For nearly five decades the restaurant has remained a gathering place where memories are made and traditions continue, making its restoration not only a construction project but an effort to preserve a beloved piece of Captiva Island history.

The Aftermath

The Mucky Duck sustained significant structural and flood damage following Hurricane Milton. Powerful storm surge pushed sand, debris, and seawater through the building, compromising framing systems, mechanical infrastructure, and interior finishes throughout the property.

The force of the storm displaced portions of the structure and left large areas exposed to the elements. Flooding and saltwater intrusion created additional complications, requiring immediate stabilization and a comprehensive reconstruction plan before restoration work could begin.

Given the restaurant’s location directly along the Gulf shoreline, rebuilding presented unique challenges. Structural components required reinforcement, damaged systems needed replacement, and portions of the building demanded careful reconstruction to meet modern safety standards while preserving the character of this longtime Captiva landmark.

Today, the rebuilding effort represents more than structural repair. It is a commitment to restoring one of Captiva Island’s most beloved gathering places so it can once again serve locals and visitors who have made The Mucky Duck part of the island’s tradition for generations.
